A message to the parents trying to ban an award-winning novel they clearly haven’t read

  • Jesmyn Ward’s “Salvage the Bones” begins with a birth. 15-year-old Esch, her brothers, Skeetah, Randall, Junior, and their father watch in a small, dilapidated shed as China, Skeetah’s white Pitbull, delivers puppies for the first time. One comes into the world already dead, while five fragile others are born fighting. This moment, masterfully written over the course of an entire chapter, introduces themes we will see again and again: the thin line between life and death, the intricacies of family dynamics, the all-encompassing restriction of racialized poverty, and the complexities of love. Set in the 12 days leading up to and just after Hurricane Katrina makes landfall, “Salvage the Bones” is broken down into vignettes that read as complete stories of their own. Every chapter is a single day as told to us by our Esch, our 14-year-old protagonist. The author is just as crucial as the book. Jesmyn Ward is historic: the only woman and only Black person to win the National Book Award for Fiction twice. She joins Ali Velshi on this week's Velshi Banned Book Club.

@benjaminscribner7737 This book isn't banned. This book can legally be printed, legally distributed, and legally sold in the USA = not actually banned. Every single year for about 200 years books have been removed from school curriculum in the USA. "REMOVED". Not "banned". Those books "removed" from school curriculum were found to be inappropriate by conservative, liberal, as well as apolitical school administrators. If you seriously believe that only MAGA Republicans are removing books from school curriculum, you're a braindead NPC that probably also believes Velshi when he told us that violent, deadly riots were actually "mostly peaceful protests". Lay off the MSM kool-aid and stop being brainwashed by MSNPC's divisive, hate mongering rhetoric.

@@Sturmavk The point is in the attempt to ban the book. Banning books, restricting access to certain types of education, and creating/distributing creationist school books are inherently antithetical to good education and American democracy. Putting a spotlight on books that conservatives want to ban is not just some shill for woke authors, it gives the everyday people who watch MSNBC (of which I am not, for the record) the opportunity to understand their own feelings about the book, since they most likely would not have even known about it, the attempted censorship of it, or cared to look up the summary if they had.
Regardless of Velshi's opinion, the viewer doesn't have to like that the book depicts birth, death, tragedy, and teen pregnancy. You can like all of it or none of it, you can think teen pregnancy shouldn't be in YA literature, you can think Hurricane Katrina is too intense of a setting for teens to be exposed to, but at the end of the day banning or attempting to ban the book takes valuable teaching tools away from teachers and children alike who could use them.

I stay away from people, have made a life to not connect to people, because of this increased entitled ignorance that they are going through. And yet people are trying to force me to connect. And it makes me hate them. I don't want to hurt anybody I have no interest to connect to anybody. So attacking them would connect me to them. I have no interest. I have course have other means to disconnect permanently if I choose to. I've thought about it a few times. Because this entitled ignorance really hurts me it hurts my life. And I can't find anybody to really help me. And the government want to attack me about it. It's so disgusting. The government that is supposed to help want to attack me I prefer that I don't live. At least we've stablished that the books in question aren't actually "banned", but have simply been "removed" from the curriculum. Just like the hundreds, if not thousands, of books removed or replace in curriculums at reputable schools world wide every year. Velshi would have us believed said books are being totally banned. Velshi would have us believe that only MAGA Republicans have removed controversial, vulgar, or inappropriate books from school curriculums for the last 200 years. In reality this is a common practice that's been practiced by liberals, conservatives, and apolitical administrators since schools were invented. This is a biased segment with the goal of stirring the pot of hate and division. Has Velshi shown a single instance of books being removed from curriculum by liberals or Democrats?
